3D Poject pg1

As a development from the successful drawing projects, I developed a 3D project which lasted three days. This involved students working in groups of two or three to source and record items of tactile interest, the challenge was to achieve this in a non-visual format. Each body of research was then exchanged between the groups (without revealing the original source). Following this, three-dimensional pieces were developed and produced focusing on the tactile aesthetic, guided by the concept of 'tactile imagery', i.e. pieces experienced primarily through touch.

The work produced was highly successful in illustrating the criteria of each body of research. See fig. 2 for example. The descriptions for this piece were 'cold', 'unpredictable', 'never ending', and 'ever-changing'. When the piece is picked up, and the tactile aesthetic experienced, the coldness is immediately felt - both through the surface temporature and the sharp unforgiving surface. When holding and examining the piece in a linear fashion - following the never-ending circular shape - the tactile qualities experience is certainly unpredictable. This is due not least to its range of materials and irregular shape, which gives it an ever-changing, free moving nature.
